46/366, if this was to be the score of an exam one would be termed as not having done well but they are the days already spent in 2020. I can still recall freshly when we raised clinking glasses in cheerful merry with hugs and kisses saying happy New Year. Wow! 320 days left in this leap year! It sure is leaping at a very fast pace and once you don’t have a timeline and priority of goals for the year, it will leap by like every other and only just be an added year to your age.
The previous year ended with a lot of retrospect for me having been bereaved of a very dear friend and sister of mine. I have been asking myself what is to this life that we keep stressing on the vane and mundane things rather than press on to a higher calling. I moved into the New Year and death kept calling on the doors of the young – my neighbor in his late thirties died of brain tumor, a young promising chap who repairs my phone was taken after a typhoid encounter. Then we woke to the death of Kobe, his daughter and the others in the helicopter crash – such a gloomy January. Maroon5 said “dreams bring back the memories”, I tell you even in your quiet space of thoughts the gaping vacuum is audible to the drop of a pin.
A day hasn’t gone by without the thought of when my very last breath will be taken and peradventure you have never had such thought, you better do! For after this life is the afterlife where it matters most to have properly prepared for while our body is still with life. The body dies and that’s all that dies by the ultimate cause of nature but the soul and spirit transcend into the realm of the unseen. Jesus answered, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that born of the Spirit is spirit”. John3:5-6 KJV
This gives the affirmation of the afterlife right from the mouth of Christ Jesus, with two emphatic ‘verily’ (confidently, certainly) which undoubtedly show how important being born again is the visa into the Kingdom of God. This is no Canadian CRS point ranking system to earning permanent residency; the only way is Jesus – total acceptance and complete conviction that He is the Son of God. Amidst man’s sinful nature, God still loves the world and sent His begotten Son, to stand in exchange for the remission of our sins and as long as we believe in Him and the fulfilled purpose He did on the Cross and in His resurrection; there lies eternal life for all who believe and receive Him which requires Faith.
In one of my earlier articles this year titled ‘Dear God, A Page from Life’s Diary’, I remembered referring to Steve Jobs’ life as he knew death was nearer than anticipated. He too began to have a rethink that life could not just end at bodily death if for any reason so then the word eternity or infinity will never have been. The consciousness of this kind of thought pattern is expected of all human being but the uncertainty of death and how untimely meets many, taking the extra effort to be better prepared daily is important. For it is appointed for a man to die once and afterward comes judgment which is the place where the other two elements of the composition of man (soul and spirit) will be tried and judged accordingly. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear Him which can destroy both the soul and the body in hell”. Matt. 10:28 KJV
It’s a leap year leaping away in time and the need to always recall and retrace our steps back to what matters in life must be recurring and consistent so we don’t lose it by the wayside.
